Was Yushchenko poisoned?
The strangest story to arise during my holiday absence concerned the mysterious ailment affecting Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko. Once young and handsome in appearance, his looks have dramatically changed for the worse. His face is now bloated, pockmarked and greenish in tone, with bags under his eyes and puffiness in his lips. He is also suffering from paralysis on one side of his face, acute pancreatitis, and backaches.
Yushchenko has accused Ukranian governmental authorities, apparently unwilling to accept the popular support of his candidacy, of poisoning him. Moreover, his doctors think his symptoms are consistent with toxins found in biological weapons.
Is his illness simply a case of eating bad sushi? Or has he been poisoned by the government to squelch his popularity?
