Notes on Armstrong Williams A couple of comments on the Armstrong Williams scandal: I was quite pleased at Mr. Williams's forthrightness regarding why he thought he made a mistake: In an interview, Mr. Williams said his mistake was thinking like a businessman, without worrying enough about journalistic ethics. ... Yesterday, Mr. Williams was counting the lessons learned. "I have realized, you know what? I am part of this media elite club, and I have to be more responsible." That puts him far ahead of the many figures discussed at the Daily Howler. However, I'm not certain I know why Mr. Williams feels he needs to apologize. Doesn't his being paid show that his ideas are commanding respect in the marketplace? As he himself argued, "selling out" isn't necessarily a bad thing, so long as one puts the Lord first in one's life. I think from now on, when Mr. Williams claims that a politician "sold out to big education," (click here and here) he should make clear whether he means to imply the person actually accepted money.
