Social Security or security from gay marriage?
The February 7 Time Magazine has an overview of the political power of Christian Evangelicals.
In a piece entitled "What Does Bush Owe the Religous Right?" authors Tumulty and Cooper note the willingess of Christian Evangelical leaders to compromise on Social Security reform if the Bush administration will be more pro-active on the gay marriage ammendment issue than what has been suggested by their comments following the November election:
The Arlington Group, a coalition of conservative religious organizations, quickly fired off to Bush political guru Karl Rove a private letter signed by such figures as Bauer, Don Wildmon of the American Family Association, Focus on the Family's James Dobson, conservative standard bearer Paul Weyrich and evangelist Jerry Falwell. They laid down a none-too-subtle threat that the Administration's "defeatist attitude" on gay marriage might make it "impossible for us to unite our movement on an issue such as Social Security privatization where there are already deep misgivings."
Yes, with the best interests of their constituents at heart, Falwell et al. are willing to convince their flock that Social Security privatization is a good idea, despite "deep misgivings," so long as they get the anti-gay marrage ban they really care about.
