Fear

This is terrible for democracy. I have been in 47 states of the USA since 9/11, and I can attest to the horrible impact the deterioration of journalism has had on the national psyche. I have found America a place of great and confused fearfulness.

-- Laurie Garrett, Pulitzer Prize winning former journalist at Newsday

Fear is the foundation of most governments; but it is so sordid and brutal a passion, and renders men in whose breasts it predominates so stupid and miserable, that Americans will not be likely to approve of any political institution which is founded on it.

-- John Adams, Thoughts on Government

Cultural Destabilization

Russell Crowe claims in the latest GQ that al-Qaeda targeted him and other Hollywood stars for kidnapping as part of an American "cultural destabilization plan."

The FBI informed him of the terror plot in January of 2001 (n.b. well before 9/11) around the time of "Gladiator" and provided protection for him from then on through the filming of "A Beautiful Mind" and "Master and Commander."

Thank God that plot was foiled. It's one thing for planes to be hijacked and crashed into the WTC towers and the Pentagon. It's quite another to lose the likes of Tom Cruise, Jennifer Lopez, Brad Pitt and Jessica Simpson.
