In a recent article, the Times Dispatch of Richmond, Virginia, reported Doctors seek protection from suits Proposal would cap awards

The report also states:

Jurors who ordered the $25 million payment to Lucy learned in the newspapers a few days later that the judge had reduced the award to $1 million, the maximum amount allowed under Virginia's strict medical malpractice laws at the time of the operation.

"I knew the reduction was coming," he said. "That's the law in Virginia."

The Washington Post recently reported on a jury trial involving medical malpractice issues in this article, Medical Malpractice Suit Goes to Jury. (February 12, 2004).  According to the article,

A $13 million lawsuit alleging medical malpractice against three Civista Medical Center physicians went to a Charles County Circuit Court jury Tuesday after lawyers gave differing explanations for how a La Plata child became severely disabled in 1998.

JURY NULLIFICATION
