g-g-g-generation Here is a reason for anyone over 25 to get depressed. wrecked.nu (21-year-old designer Gabe Rubin's personal site) He is one of the younger designers introduced in a book I just started reading, Cynthia Baron's Designing A Digital Portfolio. Having accessed several of the websites in the book, I'm beginning to see the definitive divide (I guess this was her intention)in the digital visual sensibility between two generations. There are the slick, controlled, predictable and very wealthy designers and artists, and the younger, self-sufficient, pleasure-seeking, truly experimental generation with lots of free time. The previous books I have been reading by Robin Williams now belong clearly to the old school. Gail's friend told her that until last year, the majority of her students at NYU submitted traditional presentations, while this year, most of the sophomores preferred digital presentations. Perhaps this will be a year when we will look back as the year the digital exceeded the print. Martin and I have always been saying that the next generation gap must be contingent on a new instrument or technology, like rock was instigated by the invention of an electric guitar. Unison Invite March 13, 2004 This is the invite I designed for the two-person show I am in with my friend, Gail Gregg. I've been so into design since I picked up a copy of Non-designer's Design Book by Rogin Williams. Since then, I've read four other books by her and am waiting for another one. Learning about design was my huge missing piece. There is something really powerful and magical about using simple visual codes to enhance communication skills by ten-fold. And "getting" it was like learning to ride a bicycle. Her book made me see, practically over night, the order within what seemed to be a totally random, mysterious world. It is like one-part doing a puzzle, one-part changing Barbie's clothes, and one part accounting. What a great counter weight to balance the intensity of painting! As in design, CONTRAST is vital in life...especially that of an artist. (As I committ one of the worst sins according to RW - using all caps.) 2:54:15 AM    comment []
