My dwarf nectarine flowered! It is a rather sorry looking thing, but how such a tiny fragile flower can have the power to lift me out of the ocean of pessimism is a mystery, however ephemeral the escape may be. I wonder if I'll get fruits out of just these two flowers...

Here is a reason for anyone over 25 to get depressed.

wrecked.nu (21-year-old designer Gabe Rubin's personal site)

He is one of the younger designers introduced in a book I just started reading, Cynthia Baron's Designing A Digital Portfolio. Having accessed several of the websites in the book, I'm beginning to see the definitive divide (I guess this was her intention)in the digital visual sensibility between two generations. There are the slick, controlled, predictable and very wealthy designers and artists, and the younger, self-sufficient, pleasure-seeking, truly experimental generation with lots of free time. The previous books I have been reading by Robin Williams now belong clearly to the old school.

Gail's friend told her that until last year, the majority of her students at NYU submitted traditional presentations, while this year, most of the sophomores preferred digital presentations. Perhaps this will be a year when we will look back as the year the digital exceeded the print.

Martin and I have always been saying that the next generation gap must be contingent on a new instrument or technology, like rock was instigated by the invention of an electric guitar. This could be it. The iLife generation.

Below is a screen shot of my desktop. Insert is Rubin's welcome desktop picture for a free download.

I have created a new category in honor of Martha. Here is another reason god doesn't exist. (There seem to be too many signs of godlessness these days!) Sure she is not the nicest boss in the world, but her contribution to the American society is enormously underestimated.

Taste is everything.

Taste is what guides us through the dark chaotic jumble of pathways, many of which leading to deadends. It is a gift passed down in a chain of DNA unbroken for millions of years. Of course the problem arises when we feel the need to decide who the authoriy should be, but Martha is a rare figure who united people of different socio-economic classes to come to a consensus about what to eat for dinner and how to paint easter eggs.

I'm not saying that her taste is the best the human has to offer, but she collectively raised the standard of American households, and that is huge. More than anything, she urged her fans to pay attention, take a step further, and to be proud. She could do this because she had so much idiosyncrasy and incongruency about her, which made her so fake that she was so real. But for that to play out to this degree is a tragedy of a Shakespearian scale.

These beautiful French Tulips were a gift for my opening from Agnes and Dan, who are opening the Village Tea Room in New Paltz. They've got taste!

Wow. I'm already getting positive feedback to this infantile weblog. Thank you all to those who have given me input. Every word is a nourishment.

It is cold and gray, but here is one reason rain is good.

Does anyone know what this incredibly beautiful green moth is? It looks like lichen and blended exquisitely with my mother's Chinese garden ornament.

Suika's friend Ruby found it and reminded me I should take a picture of it!

Thank you all to those who came to our opening. It was a beautiful day, and I really appreciate your sharing the gorgeous afternoon with us.

It was truly a positive and valuable experience for me and I think for Gail as well to put this show together. Our main goal was to break out of the superficial categorization and to focus on the visual, textural, and perhaps even spiritual elements of our works, which are what painting is all about.

Gail and I both work in styles that seem to be, at first, strongly associated with established genres - "abstract" and "landscape" - but I feel that our works, as with many other artists' perhaps, are more deeply appreciated when freed from such genres. Unfortunately such contextualization is not always possible, but our show was our take on such a challenge. Many of you seemed to agree with us, but I would love to hear all comments, positive and negative.

By the way, the images are of the installation process. I am learning to use this blog application as I write each entry, so there are going to be lots of going back and forth in the chronological order in addition to technical difficulties. I'll get it sometime - thanks for being patient with me.

I'm sorry I'm still running late. It's midnight right now and I'm supposed to give a gallery talk at 10 tomorrow morning. I think I'm going to give up on the idea that I will upload weblog entries for the last month or so tonight. Forgive me and meet me tomorrow at the opening. And come back soon. P.S. Don't try the links yet. They don't work. Sigh.
