Happy Anniversary!
My bags are packed. I stuffed my new expedited passport into my purse along with Avon facial cleansing cloths, the new Avon Healthy Skin moisturizer and two tubes of Avon lip balm. Last night I made a final inventory of all the products I owe costumers and sent emails and made telephone calls to explain I would be out of town for two weeks. It's a mess, really, the trail of lost lipsticks I leave behind, the condition of my house, the stack of open Avon boxes strewn about my office.
While I'm gone I'm missing two anniversaries. Next week celebrates the date I started Avon one year ago. Next week also celebrates the date I began writing my adventures here one year ago. One full year. I never expected I would meet naked customers, or women with monkeys, or men with kilt obsessions, or get kissed by a priest or nearly arrested by the police for running Avon drugs. In this year my telephone rang with news that my birth daughter wanted to meet me, and I met her for the first time since her birth. I took in an abandoned pot-bellied pig. I traveled through the Rocky Mountains with two unruly boys. My very best friend passed away. I am remembering all these moments now, while the sun rises and my boys still sleep, and I can't believe how much Avon and Life I stuffed into my back pocket in twelve short months.
I feel like I'm walking through a gate right now, a tori gate, an entrance into some new existence fueled by memories and adventure. I'm not the same person I was one year ago, and I'm not talking about my thinner Cellu-Sculpted thighs or my softer Avon skin. For all my love-hate relationship with Avon, for all the silly and eye-rolling feelings I have for this business, Avon gave me a connection with people in my neighborhood I would never otherwise have. It forced me to face my fears of knocking on doors, it opened my hands in ways I never expected. Yeah, some days I hate Avon with an everlasting passion, but if I examine my experience I must reach this conclusion: It made me more human.
See ya in a couple of weeks (unless I find an internet cafe and just can't wait to tell you some crazy story)!
