so much for my November riches - have some fudge
My neighborhood is big on homemade treats at Halloween. Everyone knows everyone around here. The lady next door makes her famous red-coated popcorn balls every year. I don't have the heart to tell her they are famous for their use as substitute street game softballs. The young couple across the street made flat chocolate cookies in the shape of witches and ghouls, sprinkled with powdered sugar.
I gave out small handmade sample bags made of pieces of ribbed red velvet, stuffed with my favorite Avon samples - tiny vials of Extraordinary fragrance, square packettes of Anew Line and Wrinkle Corrector, mini lipsticks in mauve and rose and crushed berry.
And yeah, I gave out homemade fudge, too, the recipe found at the end of the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang book, with the addition of colored mini marshmallows. I wrapped them in orange cellophane and attached a card stamped with my number and a funny saying.
"You are boooooootiful"
I expected my phone to ring off the hook this week with beauty demands. Birdie, put me down for six tubs of wrinkle cream! I need elegant perfume! Hot red lipstick! Please deliver it soon!
Yeah, right. Not a single fudge eater lifted a finger and noticed ragged cuticle, grabbed the phone to dial in an emergency request. Rats.
So here you go, my dear friends, have a piece of fudge this weekend and send a happy thought to your neighborhood Avon Lady. We need all the help we can get.
A Bird's Variation on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Fudge
Recipe Ingredients:
2 cups Sugar
2 teaspoons Light corn syrup
4 tablespoon cocoa - use the good dark european kind if you can!
1 can Evaporated Milk, small
1/4 lb butter (or margarine)
1 teaspoons water
2 cups mini marshmallows. Pretty colored ones are best!
What to do:
Mix all ingredients and stir over low heat. Cook to soft ball stage when dropped in cold water. Beat by hand until mixture loses gloss. Fold in marshmallows. Pour into a greased 8 x 8 inch pan. Cut into pieces. Cool. Good fudge! Pretty too, your Gramma would be proud.
