Polio's Back With A Vengeance in Africa

by Robert Wilkinson

While the US and most "civilized" countries spend hundreds of BILLIONS of dollars in useless armaments, polio is again at epidemic proportions in Africa and spreading rapidly in Asia as well. Efforts to eradicate the disease are hampered by Muslim suspicion about the vaccines due to warnings from "religious leaders" that they cause female infertility and AIDS. Polio has now spread from Nigeria to 10 other countries, including Sudan, where over 1 million people face starvation and disease in the near future.

This dreaded disease mainly affects children under 5, leaving them paralyzed for life. Efforts to eradicate the disease since 1988 have been very successful, dropping from 125 countries to 6, with 90% of the cases in Africa. Still, efforts to immunize children have gone slowly due to the false rumors. You would think we could divert some money and human resources to fight this horrible disease that crippled thousands in the 40's and 50's and is now savaging Africa. Hundreds of billions of dollars to kill for oil, but almost nothing for the children of the world. It's time to change priorities.
