The Grateful Dead - A Reflection on Saturn
by Robert Wilkinson
As a Deadhead from 1967 on, I remember something Jerry Garcia said back then that seems important given our present warmongering. At the time, most of the SF bands were overtly political, like Country Joe and the Fish and the Jefferson Airplane. But the Dead didn't do antiwar songs. When asked why, Shaman Jerry said something to the effect that the war was too heavy, and that the Dead were here so people could dance, enjoy, and lighten up. My feeling is that the spiraling violence has been so heavy lately that it's important to lighten up a little and enjoy life so as not to drown in the insanity of the war.
