Aquarian Astrology in January-February-March 2005 - Marc Edmund Jones and the Jones Patterns Pt. 1
by Robert Wilkinson
I had the great privilege of meeting and talking with the legendary Dr. Marc Edmund Jones on several occasions back in the late 1970's. For those of you who don't know, Dr. Jones was the creator of the Sabian Symbols, the integrated 360 degree symbols that describe the phases of our reality. These were later reinterpreted by the equally venerable Dane Rudhyar in his masterwork, "An Astrological Mandala," which I have used extensively for decades in my practice as a professional astrologer and personal advisor.
Dr. Jones was one of the most brilliant men I've ever met, but his interests were not confined to any narrow focus in one craft or approach. He wrote many books on many things, and was a true renaissance man. A master astrologer, he also formulated the "Jones Patterns," which are the 7 basic ways the planets can configure at any given time. Each of these configurations has its special qualities and approach to dealing with life and the world, regardless of whether Jupiter is in Pisces, or Saturn is in the eighth house, or what sign is rising. These are 7 basic styles describing how we relate to the world (the natal, or birth pattern), or from a larger point of view, how the world is relating to matter, situations, and each other at any given moment.
Since last Autumn, and continuing through mid-April 2005, we have been mainly living within what is called the "Bucket" pattern. It is created when all the planets except one are on one side of the sky (or chart). The singleton planet occupying the other side of the sky (or chart) forms the "handle" to the span created by the rest. The pattern only changes when enough planets leave the occupied half to create one of the other 6 patterns, or when the Moon temporarily changes the pattern for a day or three.
I wrote an article outlining the effect of the Bucket we're living with at this link. Also covered are the meaning of the Bucket, how it works, and specifics about its influence in our lives. The pattern we're all living within has Jupiter in Libra as the leading influence, and Uranus in Pisces as the closing influence. This shows us the entrances and exits to all our experiences. Between these we have Mars and Pluto in Sagittarius, Sun, Mercury, and Venus in Capricorn, and Neptune in Aquarius. The Sagittarius, Aquarius, and Pisces influences are fairly stable, because they don't move very quickly through their signs, so this part of the pattern will be with us for a long time. I've explained some of these long-term influences in other articles, including this one. and this one.
Jupiter is closing into the span occupied by the long-term planets, so that will add to the pattern for the next 7-9 years. Its conjunctions with the outer planets will produce some long-term changes that will benefit all of us, depending on where these fall in our charts. I'll cover these as they become important for our ability to plan in the years to come.
