Astrology at Work and Play in June 2005 - Fire, Earth, Air, Water Element balance

by Robert Wilkinson

In June the element patterns and proportions shift frequently, starting the month with diminished Fire (inspiration) and zero Earth (practicality). Water (feelings) grows stronger and more prominent through June 26, and Air (communications, ideas) starts the month with more planets than all the rest together, but gradually diminishes as the month evolves. Whereas May had a huge Air emphasis, indicating a great time for increasing your mental activity, learning, communications, contacts with new information sources, and expanded relationships, this Air quality will diminish rapidly after June 11.

Air begins to diminish on June 3, when Venus enters Cancer. From June 3-10, there are four planets in Air and four in Water, showing a lot of feelings and interactions, but not much inspiration, since only Pluto is in Fire, and zero Earth, a condition that will be with us through July 21. As with last month, this means that we will have to draw on our internal Earth energies to compensate for what is lacking in our outer worldly situations. During the first third of June, the preponderance of Air and Water with deficiency of Earth and Fire shows mental-ideological-theoretical and feeling-emotive-experiencial energies are very strong, with inspiration and practicality not very evident except as we bring them to whatever situation we're in.

Fire is optimistic, adventurous, emotional, and brightening, Earth is practical. When these elements are deficient, we need to come up with inspiration, sensitivity, and practicality to balance whatever is lacking in the outer world. The inspirational quality increases after June 11 when Fire increases by one, and becomes much more prominent after Mercury and Venus enter Leo on June 27-28.

With no planet in Earth from the end of May through late July, we'll have to be very grounded and organized if we are not to float off into the distance. We will have to call on our inner Earth energies when there are none in the outer world to draw on. Of course, the void usually brings forth a response to overdo that area, due to insecurity, so maintain a reasonable balance, take care of details without obsessing on them, and keep a loose grip on the reins lest your "horse of personality" rear back and throw you. Or run you into a tree limb, especially when the Mutable squares and oppositions fragment many aspects of life throughout the month.

Every month the Sun changes signs around the 19-22. This month features the Sun entering Cancer, the point of the Summer Solstice. Similar to last month when the Sun entered Gemini triggering the Grand Irrationality, this time Mercury and Venus both occupy the Cancer point of that weird configuration that is making the atmosphere so strange for all of us. Obsessive-compulsive behavior, irrationality, and critical forks in the road mark the times when this configuration is most active, so be alert around the Solstice.

In June Mercury rapidly moves from Gemini into Cancer on June 11, and then into Leo on June 27-28. This rapid movement from Air to Water to Fire shows a lot of quickly changing activities and experiences in the areas in our charts where Gemini and Virgo are prominent during these four weeks. These parts of our lives will move from exploration and discovery through decisions and reorganizations into inspiration and creativity in a very brief time span. Venus enters Cancer June 3 and then Leo June 27-28, affecting Venus-ruled areas of our charts accordingly. Whatever we have in Taurus or Libra will go through quick changes this month, and we will be brought a lot of information in a short period of time.

Elemental shifts may be subtle, but they do affect the atmosphere we live and work within. The more of any element, the more that tendency preponderates. The fewer of any element, the more we must find those qualities within ourselves to compensate for what is lacking in externals. As the Sun, Mercury, and Venus move into Cancer, we will be given a Cancer experience in the areas of our lives ruled by Taurus, Gemini, Leo, Virgo, and Libra. Also, since Mars slips into Aries at the on June 11, the areas of the chart ruled by Aries and Scorpio will transition from a Water (feeling-experiential) to a Fire (inspirational-magnetic) emphasis. This also includes any planets we have in these signs, whether natal, progressed, or in the solar return chart.

To recap, during the next few weeks the mental-associative-interactive energies grow weaker due to diminished Air while Fire grows stronger due to Mars entering Aries and Mercury and Venus entering Leo at the end of the month. So with Saturn in Cancer and Uranus in Pisces, the outer planets still show an emphasis toward feeling, with some thinking and associating held steady by Neptune in Aquarius, whereas the inner planets offer decreasing interactions and ideas with an ever increasing sense of feeling and experiencing due to their presence in Cancer.
