Crusade against religious spam continues...!

Feels good to know I am not alone in fighting to rid the world of "Christian" spam. Not long after I penned If you really, truly love Jesus, read this... or else!, I got an email entitled, "Read only if you have time for God", and it ended thus:

Isn't it funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell. Isn't it funny how someone can say "I believe in God" but still follow Satan (who, by the way, also "believes" in God). Isn't it funny how you can send a thousand jokes through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing? Isn't it funny how when you go to forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you for sending it to them. Isn't it funny how I can be more worried about what other people think of me than what God thinks of me. I pray, for everyone who sends this to their entire address book, they will be blessed by God in a way special for them. And send it back to the person who sent it, to let them know that indeed it was sent out to many more.

I don't think I could have done better had I attempted a parody. But it doesn't end there: I found a fellow crusader in my fight against the evils of religious email spam! For this morning, I received the following email (as did the other victims of said glurge):

What kind of scam is this on-going spam email that we continue to receive from all of you. If it's not "send to 10 people immediately" to lower gas prices, it's "send to 10 people unless youre ashamed of God". Quite frankly, I've had enough junk, spam email, in the hundreds per week, and I ask you to PLEASE stop with the junk emails. Thank you and God Bless.

Sincerely, XXXXX XXXX

Great to know it is not a lonely battle I am fighting. Spam-crusaders of the world, unite!

Celebrating the little moments

One of my favourite films of recent years is Amelie (2001). I love the way it celebrates life's little moments. Nothing is too trivial or inconsequential to be celebrated as a thing of joy and beauty in Amelie's world: Cracking the top off a creme brulee with a spoon and dipping her hand into a sack of grain are two of her penchants, for example.

What is life but a succession of moments? I am not sure we appreciate the little moments enough. Perhaps we're so obsessed with the big things that the real stuff of life just passes us by.

Here are some of life's little moments I want to celebrate. Drop by and add your own. I would love to hear them.

The sound of my dad in the kitchen, pouring a cup of coffee, circling the inside of the cup with a spoon, tapping the spoon twice on the rim, and dropping it to the counter with a clatter.

Being far away from home, and smelling something that reminds me of mom's cooking.

Halfway through the day, suddenly remembering a pleasant dream I had the night before.

Waking up on a winter's morning to a fresh blanket of snow.

An A&W rootbeer in a frosted glass at the end of a long hike during a hot summer.

Waking up to find the cat snuggled up on my legs.

Discovering something in common with a stranger I got chatting to somewhere.

A student hanging around after class just to tell me something they thought was worth sharing.

Stumbling upon a photo I haven't seen in ages, and remembering the story behind it.

Noticing for the first time a picture I've been passing every day on the wall for twenty years.

Tasting something nice I haven't tasted since I was a kid.
