Losing church and finding God You must read The Great Canadian Bathroom Book sometime. In case you're curious, the inside is exactly the same as The Great American Bathroom Book (and The Great Australian Bathroom Book and The Great British Bathroom Book, for all I know), except that the front cover has a picture of a maple leaf. (Honestly, that's all it takes to make a book genuine, certified Canadian -- we Canucks aren't fussy.)
Anyway, in the bathroom this morning (where else?), I was perusing the pages of this forgotten classic of Canadian literature, and happened to come across this ironic quote from the late comedian Lenny Bruce:
Every day people are straying away from the church and going back to God.
Despite my disillusionment with much of what I've been handed down as "Christianity," I have had no problem remaining within "organized religion". On the other hand, I know not a few folk who have given up on "church" altogether, and I see where they're coming from. I ain't gonna be their judge.
I guess it all goes back to that irony that is at the very centre of the gospel, the centre of the cross of Jesus: That God is at the very last place you expect to find him. Some folk just never find out who God really is until they've ditched all the trappings.
