When I wake up screamingI had forgotten, until a couple of weeks ago, that one of my pregnancy joys is leg cramps. By this, I mean a golf-ball sized muscle spasm that visibly travels up and down the back of my leg and comes on with almost no warning, always in the middle of the night. I start to wake up as it starts, usually thinking, "No, no, I can breathe through this, I can stretch it out and make it go away"...but when it's woken me from a dead sleep, no way. It's going to come. Usually the whimper wakes the H up--he's used to this now, it's happened four or five times over the last few weeks--but by the time he's alert enough to (thank god for him) massage my calf or thigh--I'm fully screaming into the pillow, biting it, and pounding it for good measure. Mind you, I have a pretty high pain tolerance. This is worse than labor. Then, the day after, my leg is tight and sore and feels on the brink of spasm all day, no matter how much BenGay-like junk I rub into it, no matter how long I keep it elevated (not so practical during a day filled with tasks and toddler.) I don't know why I needed to write this down, except that, honestly, it's what's filling my thoughts today. 4:46:44 PM |
