Wherein, I join my voice to the chorus of bad Brokeback jokesOh, why can't I quit you, Trader Joe? My diet is old news. It comes and goes, has strong days and weak ones, and slowly, slowly, it progresses. But damn if I am not irreversibly stuck on Trader Joe's Thai Chili Lime Peanuts, and any of several varieties of dark chocolate, conveniently located in the impulse section at the check out. The Thai Peanuts are the fault of the New York Times, which, promoting the opening of the first TJ's in Manhattan, ran an extensive story (probably the most extensive one ever done with the cooperation of the TJ's corp., which is notoriously press shy), a highlight of which was the creation of said peanuts. When I saw them in my neighborhood TJ's that week, I had to try them. Why not? I like spicy. I like sour. I like peanuts. But I have never liked peanuts like I like these. They have become my "legal cheat" on my diet, the thing I go to when stress makes me want to dive into the pantry and come out with potato chips and cookies in either fist. The peanuts are a better choice, true. But they are crack, I tell you. Do not start with them, for you will be forever imprisoned. As for the dark chocolate--that's medicinal. (The New York Times article, by Julia Moskin, is great, but only accessible if you're a Times Select member, thanks to the Times' greedy new net plan...but check it out if you can. If you love TJ's, it's a good read.) 11:40:47 PM |
Iknow this would have been scintillatingAll kinds of things to post and just as I sit down to begin--I hear the Babe squawling from the monitor. Alas. So I leave you with this: please visit this site and make a donation--just $10--to help children in Uganda who are being kidnapped and forced into slave service as soldiers. "Tragic" is insufficient to describe this situation. It's horrific. Do what you can to help. 11:25:08 AM |
