For those of us filmmakers more comfortable with words than with pictures, I recommend studying the Turkish movie Distant (2002), available through Netflix.
A man's solitude is disrupted by a freeloading cousin looking for a job
in Istanbul. Mahmut is ambivalent. He's lonely and depressed, but the
cousin is a slob. Writer/director Ceylan portrays the complexities of their relationship almost entirely without words.
