The Gay Question
I can't believe Kerry's is taking heat for mentioning the fact that Dick Cheney has a gay daughter. Yes, everyone has known for some time that he has an openly gay daughter. Apparently the vice president and the second lady accept her and her sexual orientation. She is working on her father's re-election campaign.
The Republicans have made the proposed Defense of Marriage constitutional amendment a part of their campaign, so they have made homosexuality a political issue. Conservatives have maintained for years that sexual orientation is a choice (the "homosexual agenda").
Thus, during the debate, when both candidates were asked if they believe homosexuality is something you are born with or a choice, Bush responded, "I don't know." Maybe he really doesn't know, but his party believes it's a choice.
Kerry stated he believes it's something you are born with, and then pointed out that Cheney has a gay daughter that he loves.
So maybe it was calculated political move. If so, so what? Why should't he (perhaps too subtly) point out the inherent hypocrisy of his opponents' position? Why not ask Bush if he thinks Cheney's daughter is gay by choice?
