Ray Charles has left us. If anyone deserved the title of the Great Communicator, it wasn't Reagan, it was Brother Ray. He spoke to everyone. He went beyond his genre, beyond race, beyond all expectations. What is there to say about a R & B singer who released "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music" and made it one of his finest albums? His version of "Over the Rainbow" still makes me cry, never more than today.
If you subscribe to EMusic (and I'll say this for the first time - if you don't, go over to www.emusic.com now and subscribe), you can find a remarkable collection of his work here: http://www.emusic.com/cd/10708/10708640.html.
And I can't stop thinking about that Joan Osborne song, Spiderweb. We'll miss you, Ray.
