SNL Debrief - U2 Rocks, the Show Bombs

The only reason to watch SNL anymore is the musical guests. The sketches are tragic, as B-list comedians beat their best ideas to death and Lorne searches for the next "Blues Brothers" breakout idea. (More than likely, the next breakout idea is going to be a stinker like "Pat" or Mary Catherine what's-her-face.)

But U2 was on last night. And they broke tradition by performing three songs, and apparently - after the credits rolled - doing another three-song set just for the live audience. So I watched it, with my thumb poised on the fast-forward button.

Anything else worth watching on the show? The guest host was Luke Wilson, and while innoffensive, he didn't do anything I can remember. Amy Poehler made me laugh once during Weekend Update. Tina Fey continues to be brilliant in a desert of crap. And they found two different places to talk about the Detroit/Indiana melee. Ho hum.

If you didn't see the show, the songs were "Vertigo", "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own", and "I Will Follow". The new songs were great - "Sometimes..." was especially moving. Anyway, here's U2 performing their third song, as the credits roll. Enjoy.

P.S. Somewhere, in an alternate universe, Colin Farrell offered to move up his guest hosting slot so he could be on with the boys from Dublin. Three cast members were hospitalized for alcohol poisoning.
