What I'm Listening to...

Last week, I saw a band on David Letterman that blew me away.  The name of the band was ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead.  Two drummers, three guitars, no bass.  The sound was ferocious, but the melodies were sound and well-crafted.  The sound is just amazing.

I went on a furious geek-out after that.  I found an entire concert and downloaded it.  I searched the web, found fansites with video and audio clips.  I looked up old reviews.

...Trail of Dead is one of those bands I've been meaning to look into for some time now.  Like Damien Rice, like the Blood Brothers, like Bright Eyes.  They've been getting buzz for a while, and the Stranger has written an admiring article or two, but I just never quite made time for them.

They just released their new album, Worlds Apart.  If guitars and shouting vocals don't put you off, go pick it up.  Oh, and check out the Worlds Apart EP available on iTunes.  They have one original song and two astounding covers.  The first cover is "The Porpoise Song," a Monkees song that was the theme song for their tripp-tastic movie, "Head."  The second song amazed me - it's a cover of a Genesis song, "Back in N.Y.C." that appeared on their album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

It's a tricky song, with intricate keyboard riffs and a very precise vocal melody.  They not only nail it, but they elevate the song.   This is a band worth exploring.
