What the hell's going on with the Democratic party?

On the one hand, the Dems in the Senate seems to be showing some ganas.   They've unified against Bush's Social Security stock market scheme, and now I hear that they're starting to make Alberto Gonzales' confirmation look more difficult than anyone expected.  Are the Democrats starting to show some guts?

Meanwhile, all five of you readers know that I've been anxiously monitoring the DNC chair race.  (I almost typed "chairman."   Are all of the candidates really men?  Hmm... )  Suddenly, candidates appear to be dropping out with great rapidity.  The big ex-candidate so far is Martin Frost, the lightweight neo-Dem who ran for reelection by bragging about his connections with George W.  David Leland, ex-Ohio party chair, also dropped out (did anyone know he was running?)

The only men standing (and they are all men) are Tim Roemer, Donnie Fowler, and Simon Rosenberg.  And Howard Dean, who everyone seems to be acknowledging as the next chair.   So suddenly the party's acting like it's an aggressive minority party, and they've picked a genuine firestarter as their next head.  Is the party waking up?

(A big shout-out to Rayne, who has apparently been organizing phone call parties, circulating petitions, and, I don't know, flying skywriting planes in support of Howard Dean.  All this, and still enough time to remodel her house.  Rayne for next DNC chair!!)
