Insider Party Hacks and Palm-Pounding Weasels
In other words, the Democratic Convention is about to start.
Don't get me wrong. Better a dozen Democratic conventions than
one speech I have to watch by that drooling idiot in the White
House. Still, it's always a parade of longtime Dem insiders,
Congressmen and -women for life, and people who once were "the next big
thing," and can't get used to the idea that the spotlight has moved.
Where's the next generation? Where's the revitalized party, the new wave of excited D's
that Howard Dean was working so hard to mobilize? Instead, we get
even yet still another speech by Ted Kennedy. I know, I know,
Dean's getting his turn to speak too, but I'm sure he'd rather have ten
people that no one has heard of (yet) than the same old tired
roster.
It doesn't help that the press covering the convention only cares about
people they've heard of. MSNBC has a poll up about which pol will
deliver the best speech, and they list for choices:
Ted Kennedy
Teresa Heinz
John Kerry
John Edwards
Max Cleland
Jimmy Carter
Bill Clinton
Al Gore
Hillary Clinton
Bill Richardson
Jane Napolitano
Jim Rassman
Elizabeth Edwards
Christie Vilsack
Hmm. Seems like there's someone missing.
Howard Dean? Dennis Kucinich?
How about the guy that's delivering the keynote address? Barack Obama? Maybe you heard of him.
Problem with Barack
is he's untested on national tv, and frankly, he's not anybody
yet. He's an Illinois state senator who's running for a Senate
Seat. Give him 20 years. Then maybe we'll notice him.
Now, Hillary, on the other hand...
