Did I mention the placenta situation

Here's the thing about a baby. Everything is magical and extraordinary and works in its own mysterious way, and occasionally there are surprises. Not bad surprises - just surprises.

We had a surprise a few months ago. The surprise was that the placenta was growing in my beloved wife in the wrong place - over her cervix. For obvious reasons, you want the baby in front of of the cervix first, not the placenta. Anyway, this is a condition called placenta previa. It used to be a big deal thirty or forty years ago, because mothers would try to give birth with the placenta coming out first, and ... well, it would cause problems.

But now we have ultrasound, and so doctors can detect this months before the delivery. So we knew about the previa several months ago. We've been waiting for several months for the placenta to move into its proper position, and it's moving, but not quite enough.

This is completely healthy and safe for little O, but the thing is that Mrs. B will have to get a cesarean section unless it moves. And with that, I'd like to introduce the lovely Mrs. Radiant Bluesky (R. for short) with our baby update.

Hi all -

Went to see the doctor this afternoon and it looks like Oliver will probably come a little early! I still have a "marginal" placenta Previa. So this is the plan:

On May 5th I will have another ultrasound. If the placenta still has not moved enough, then I will have an amniocentisis to check and make sure Oliver's lungs are fully developed (they should be we will be just about 38 weeks by then - they just do it at this point as a double check). Then if all looks good I will have a c-section the next day - May 6th.

The doctor said if the placenta doesn't move, then they like to deliver early because if you wait longer then 38 weeks, the chances are higher that you will go into labor and serious bleeding can occur.

If the placenta HAS moved enough then we will just wait and have a normal birth.

So, things are a little up in the air, but we are planning as if we will have the c-section on the 6th.

Needless to say we are a little nervous and scared - it's coming a little faster then we anticipated and it kind of hit home when we were talking with the doctor this afternoon!!!!

Oliver is growing just on schedule and he is currently at the 66th percentile for his weight. The doctor said things look good.

So that's the news on the baby front!
