People are starting to fill in that last bit of black line that started with Private Lyndie English in Abu Ghraib prison and has worked its way across the map right up to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

The other day we heard Jimmy Carter's CIA chief, Stansfield Turner call Dick Cheney the "Vice President for Torture."

Today it's former Sec. of State Colin Powell's chief of staff, retired U.S Army Col Larry Wilkerson saying that Cheney provided the "philosophical guidance" and "flexibility" that led to the torture of detainees in U.S. facilities.

Oh, but I forgot. "We do not torture," says President George Bush.

Well it wasn't a serenade from Ja Rule or Mick Jagger, but my guitar-playing friends whom my son calls "The Mighty Wind" were over last night for a jam session and sang me a full-throated, well-harmonized Happy Birthday. Our harmonicist Paul P. told me I was blush red; he didn't know I was looking at the 10 of them and thinking how long it'd been since I'd had a birthday party like kids do and how deeply good it makes a person, a kid, an adult, feel to have the focused good will of true friends. Don't underestimate it.
