I've never liked the national medal count competition in the Olympics and these days, when it becomes sometimes a matter of some discomfort on the international scene to be American given the hubris of our foreign policies, I wasn't particularly bothered by Lindsey Jacobellis letting her snowboarding gold medal slip yesterday to some last minute hot-dogging, a style and instinct inextricable with her sport, which stubbornly remains a sport and not a profession even with the cameras on and the endorsements signed and sealed. She seemed completely thrilled and satisfied with a silver. This column in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch catches the Olympic collison between slacker culture and stodgy tradition.
