I know I've been awfully quiet since the Patriots lost the AFC championship to the Colts. Don't read anything into it. I am NOT a die-hard Patriots fan (I hail from NY after all -- just living here in Boston by serendipity). And I am NOT in love with Tom Brady like every other woman around here (though he is awfully cute in a clean cut kind of way -- and I have to admit I did feel a kind of cringe when I saw those paparazzi photos in the Herald of him with Gisele the morning after  -- TMI don't you think?).

And, not being a die-hard Patriots fan I only happen to have a Patriots jersey because my husband was looking for some kind of quick birthday present for me and saw one hanging on a rack in the local SUPERMARKET of all places and I only put it on and wore it for every game thereafter to make him think I appreciated the gift NOT because I thought wearing it might somehow transmit my energy to the team and help it win. No.

And I did NOT cry for the team's loss but only consoled an officemate who is the REAL THING, that is a real Patriots fan, not like me, such a newcomer that I of course wouldn't feel a defeat deep deep down like that. Of course not. And so I'll watch the Bears/Colts this Sunday with equanimity but, um, somehow I don't think I'll be able to muster as much INTEREST despite the fact that I am NOT, as I said, a die-hard Patriots fan and Patriots only. Not really. No.

Molly Ivins

Columnist Molly Ivins died today. I worked with her back in the 70s at the NYTimes. She was a force. An original. A big progressive voice that will be missed.

We honor her best by speaking up -- louder, with more insistence, with humor and humanity -- until we see some change.
