Trench Coats Circa 1967 Contributed by Karen
When I arrived at the University of Florida in the fall of 1966, it was
with a suitcase full of skirts and blouses and high-heeled shoes. That's
what we wore to classes. I don't remember if there was a dress code, or if
it was our own sense of rightness. But by the end of the year, in the early
summer of 1967, the world seemed to have changed and our dress code with
it. Nobody wore skirts or dresses any more, we had moved to old blue jeans
and T-shirts (I don't think I even owned a pair of jeans before 1967).
I remember we had first classes very early in the morning--starting at 7:30.
Not only did we not want to get up early enough to put on the make-up and
wardrobe that we had come to school with in 1966, many times we didn't take
the time to get dressed at all; I remember many times just rolling out of
bed and putting a trench coat on top of whatever I had--or hadn't--slept
in, buttoning up and going to class. I don't remember ever wearing a skirt
to class again.
