Springtime, and the bunnies are ecstatic over the arrival of fresh
greens to eat! Bugs can't get enough lemon thyme, which we have
planted instead of grass in several sectors of our yard. Grass is
not only boring, but it takes an awful lot of water to keep it
healthy. Here in Colorado, other fragrant flowering groundcovers
work better and serve multiple purposes.
Bunnita, however, prefers the tops of the peanut plants that sprout up
after the squirrels hide their peanuts in our garden each fall.
We keep a few peanut plants thriving, just to keep the bunnies fat and
happy. Both of them go nuts for lemon balm leaves too!
That's a relative of the mint, with a strong lemony leaf that is
wonderful in tea and full of vitamins. I put it in my water
bottle before going for a hike, to flavor the water. Bugs also
loves the peppermint and spearmint leaves. I guess minty-fresh
breath might matter to those little guys too.
I'm just happy that the long, long winter is over. Last week the
temperatures went down again in a crazy way, down to freezing at
night. So unusual. But now it feels like the cold is
past. Bugs and Bunnita get to play in the hammock enclosure,
digging their hole deeper and deeper every day. Maybe some day I
can figure out how to upload photos and post some pictures of them in
their estate.
