This
is the meme that's going around. Mike of Chew Toys sent it to me. I've
never done one, so here goes. It is kinda entertaining to get to know
the various bloggers through the memes. It's also a good way to find
new blogs by clicking on the links, so I guess its alright.
Name 5 things you miss most about your childhood:
1.
Playing in the woods for hours, really lost in my games. Running along
the trails pretending to be a horse. Climbing trees and surveying the
world from up high. Walking along dead logs or fallen treetrunks.
Collecting tadpoles in a jar. Playing with the box turtles we'd find.
Watching ants do all their busy business around an anthill. I still
love the deep musky smell of woods, and still love hanging around with
my pals in nature. It's just different now.
2. Being able to swim
really well. I have a seriously injured/damaged arm, and haven't been
able to do things that require two healthy arms for decades. I'd love
to be able to lift things with both arms again. And archery. That was
fun. Gotta have 2 usable arms, though.
3. Playing "Monster" with
my dad and all the neighborhood kids on summer evenings. All the
zillions of kids would gather in our yard. Dad would chat with us all
normally, then suddenly become a monster like Frankenstein, walking
stiffly with his arms out, making monster roars. We'd shriek and
scatter to the four winds. "Monster" would catch one of us, and take us
to his lair to cook us into stew. He'd set his catch down by a tree,
and tell the victim to wait there. Naturally, "Monster" would turn his
back, and the victim would escape, and the game went on. I guess it was
a fancy version of Hide and Seek, with a lot more shrieking.
4. Sitting in my
overstuffed chair on a saturday, eating Oreo cookies and reading a book
all day long. I remember coming down for dinner after a full day of
reading, feeling like I was still in the book's story, and like my
family was a dream. Also, sitting up in my willow tree with an apple,
reading a book or just thinking about how to run my life. I did that a
lot when I was around 9 - 13 years old: figuring out my life while
sitting in the willow tree.
5. Painting for half the
night. In my teen years, I had an easel and paints and canvasses in my
bedroom. I have always gotten a second wind around 10:00 at night.
During those years, I would start painting around 9 or 10 at night, and
keep on going til the painting was well underway. Often that was 3 a.m.
My parents were wise enough to let me do that. For some reason, night
was when my creativity would peak. I still remember some of the paintings I did in those days.
