The World's Best Dream!

April 27, 2006
Last night I had The World's Best Dream!

In my dream, I lived in a three story house, with lots of little rooms and windows overlooking ocean beaches and woods. Eric Clapton and James Taylor came over, with some professional British musicians whom I didn't know, to have a jam session at my house! It was thrilling to watch them come in and set up.

I had arranged all my percussion instruments and drums (which I do own in waking life) into a circle in the biggest room, with chairs all around. Several of the musicians came in and started playing in there, but a lot of the others gathered in other little rooms. Dozens of friends of mine and friends of theirs came over too, bearing dishes of food to share. Each room was crowded with smiling people. Traffic was thick in both directions on all the stairways. Eric Clapton kept telling me that he thought my sister was really cute. I kept assuring him that she really was, my thoughts leaping ahead to Eric Clapton as my brother-in-law!

The quality of the musicians and the music was what stood out most. There was none of the fiddling around and jarring dischord that happens when friends of differing skill levels get together on someone's porch to jam. In true Eric Clapton style, the notes were sparse, slow and perfect. It seemed to be mostly blues, in each room. Even James Taylor was playing blues. There was one red-haired, freckled musician who was particularly wonderful in his lead guitar playing. I wonder if he was some musician I've seen in the past, forgotten by all but my subconscious now.

Music has had such a big place in my life. I really miss it. Sometimes I participate in drum circles, but I do long for more. Maybe the next bend in my road will reveal a place where I can participate in live music again. Maybe Eric and James will come over then!
