Bread Crumbs...
the ephemeral hierarchy of memory
There are old children with old eyes, whose oldness displays their distinctive character . . . old souls who seem to be waiting to catch up to the time when they can finally come into their own. Estranged in childhood, distressed in youth, they have been old from the beginning. The Force of Character and the Lasting Life, by James Hillman. ~ quote courtesy of Darcy Woodall

Why Bread Crumbs...

It's odd how an original idea for a blog doesn't necessarily manifest, but transforms itself into something else. I had imagined writing about either food or politics (in particular with cartoons), or perhaps posting some poems, but nothing has felt quite right, so far. Walking home from the train a few days ago, I had the idea of casting a horoscope for this blog and trying to see which direction to go, what it's real leanings were, based upon its beginning. I settled on using the time of my first posting, rather than when I downloaded the software. Sort of like a first breath... but it still didn't make much sense, even though the 9 Aries ascendant might incline toward politics and the 4th and 5th house planets in Cancer and Leo could be about home and food and creativity...

In the meantime, another blog I've been reading mentioned growing up in the Army, and I had just posted something about Elizabeth Edwards growing up in the Navy. And I was thinking about posting a poem  about growing up in the Air Force (but haven't yet, since I've been paying too much attention to the DNC Convention news). Finally, my subconscious clicked and I thought I might write about growing up as a military brat, which would bring into sharper relief the idea of Bread Crumbs, which I chose because it refers to a software programming convention that helps track where one is on a website, but I had also intended it to mean remembering how we have arrived at the peculiar political environment in which we now live, as well as settling, or not, for what is left over. And then, there is the fact that I can no longer eat wheat (or dairy)-- i.e., part of the original food rationale. But, finally, for a military brat, whose only constants are ephemeral, Bread Crumbs is an even more poignant metaphor. So there it is, tentatively, an organizing scheme for this blog.
