Dear George,

I see your some of your younger aides want you to project a humbler image.  I don’t know George, that could start you down a slippery slope.  You see, humility requires a dollop of honesty, and honesty is a virus that can quickly get out of control.

On the other hand, the lie lends itself to an aggressive arrogance since it can admit neither doubt nor an alternative point of view.  Humility implies doubt thus leaving the door open for truth to slip through.  Truth would destroy an administration like yours.

Take the flap over the National Security Agency and its bugging of domestic phone traffic sans court approval.  Now we all know that the real reason for the bugging has nothing to do with terrorism.  Its sole purpose was to establish the supremacy of the executive branch over the judicial and the legislative.  For you to humbly admit that NSA erred would dilute this power.  Go with the arrogance.  Hunt down the person, or persons, responsible for leaking the story to the press and prosecute them for something.  Granted, this is a little like a burglar suing the neighborhood watch group that called the police on him, but, hell, you’ve been there, done that and got the t-shirt.

No George, humility is for wimps.  Karl had the right idea:  smear your critics, accuse them of treason, cast doubt on Murtha’s military record, and condemn Congress for pampering the terrorists.  Never forget you are doing God’s work, and the manifesting of God’s will on Earth requires a ruthless arrogance that brooks no opposition.

Your Admirer,

Belacqua Jones
