Dear George,

Her picture was on the front page of Friday’s New York Times. The girl’s shroud was a plastic shopping bag.  She will never see her second birthday; a suicide bomb at the Imam Hussein shrine in Iraq took her out.

Suicide bombs and smart bombs have one thing in common:  a pathological madness detonates them both.  There is a slight difference, though.  The madness behind the suicide bomb screams while the madness behind the smart bomb speaks softly.  This is why we will win in Iraq.  Ours is a madness grounded in reason.  We eschew the emotional excesses of the suicide bomber who splatters his victims with his viscera. Our death is sanitary. We never murder out of anger; it is always a matter of policy.

Let us eulogize the dead girl.  She is a martyr who died that Iraq may one day reap the rewards of democracy and free trade.  Let the shopping bag that was her shroud be a symbol of a new Iraq that will rise from the rubble of the old, an Iraq that will one day know the joy of unrestrained consumption.

Your admirer

Belacqua Jones
