Dear George,

In God we Trust.  That says it all. Isn’t it great to know God is helping us maneuver the water board when we interrogate a detainee, or that God is our copilot when we bomb the wrong house and an innocent family dies, or that God keeps our aim true when our boys shoot up the wrong car at a checkpoint?

It’s all about God, the God who led us to these verdant shores, who guided our hand as we pushed back the dark tide of savage ignorance, who helped us take the land that was ours before we took the land.  This is the self-same God who has led our troops to victory over the forces of evil in war after war.

At least, that’s what we claim.

The truth is that in times of conflict, God is too busy weeping to take sides.  Not that it matters.  There’s nothing juicier than a war between two misconceptions of God.  Piety is violence’s turbocharger.  It gives it that little power-kick that sends it over the top.  Violence must be grounded in an absolute, and God is the Tiffany of absolutes.  It’s hard to demonize an enemy if God isn’t around.  Violence gets its edginess from the prayer, not the war cry.

Your admirer,

Belacqua Jones
