Dear George,

You have to be one of history’s greatest tightrope walkers. Here you are, with your power resting upon a two-tier base, and the trick is to keep the one happy while you screw the other.  The first tier consists of the haves and have mores.  This is your primary base, the one you must kiss up to.  The second tier consists of the unfortunate dolts whom you have frightened into supporting you even as you slip them the shaft.

Your finesse amazes me.  One day, you ask for an additional $120 billion for the Iraq enterprise, thus insuring more black ink for Halliburton and its ilk.  Then, in the next breath, you continue to tighten the screws on the domestic social programs that benefit your secondary base.  I especially loved they way you are cutting back on Medicare benefits by some $30 billion.  Let’s face it; we sure as hell don’t want aging Boomers, who have been paying into the system all their working lives, to drain the treasury and undercut our military-industrial complex.

There is but one reason this whole song and dance routine works—Rod v. Wade.  Never overturn it!  Make noise about it, condemn it, but don’t let it go.  This is the one issue that vitalizes your secondary base and keeps them in your camp, no matter how badly you screw them. Lose it, and you lose the drones.

Your admirer,

Belacqua Jones
