Dear George,
Hey, big guy! Have you noticed how the drones are pissing away their freedom without any help from Big Brother? This is especially true among drones that think of themselves as “professionals.” For example, a Middletown, NJ school district is planning to begin random drug testing of its students in an effort to prevent drug abuse.
There they are! Marching freedom to the graveyard beneath a banner that reads “prevention,” for prevention is the ass upon which oppression rides into Jerusalem. You can sling more shit trying to prevent something than you can trying to deal with it. Look at all the benefits that have accrued from your attempts to “prevent” terrorism: torture, rendition, secret prisons, warrentless wiretapping, and the wholesale incarceration of dark-hued immigrants.
The Middletown School District is doing its part in the Global War on Terror by conditioning our young people to accept random searches of their person with no other probably cause other than the fact they are teenagers. At the same time, they are teaching our teens that liberty is an anachronism, a foolish sentiment of an earlier age, and that when the chips are down, propriety always trumps freedom.
The Board also shows us how to defend the indefensible. Whenever your argument is on shaky constitutional ground, go for the quantative. A school official points out that random drug testing in other schools has reduced drug abuse. Of course, that begs the question of whether drug abuse is reduced, or whether it is simply moved to a new locale. Besides, the kid stoned in the classroom will get help; the kid stoned in his bedroom will not.
The Middletown Board of Education is also reinforcing the value of anxiety as an instrument of control. Always keep them anxious about their children; let them see threats where none exist; let them see evil where there is only blandness, temptation where there is only distraction; and above all, let them see a demon in every shaded place.
In the end, George, the sanitary bubble imprisons.
Your admirer,
Belacqua Jones
