For the slight of hand artist, the most important move is the movement of the hand that distracts the audience from the preparation for the execution of the trick. One hand is flung outward while the other slips the coin in or out of the cloth, depending upon whether it is appearing or disappearing.
Your Global War on Terrorism is the hand that is flung outward, diverting the public’s attention from what is really happening. The main thrust of your administration is not the destruction of Muslim terrorists, but the care and feeding of the Beltway terrorists who are slowly dismantling America and shipping her abroad. Whatever is left of America—the boarded up Main Streets, the rusting plants, and the plummeting standard of living—you are turning into a police state.
Now, some people panic at the though of a police state because they can only see its downside: the surveillances, the arbitrary arrests, the secret trials, the torture, and the suppression of subversive t-shirts. However, for the American people, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The police state gives us law and order, safe streets, decency, comprehensible music, and a return to a golden age when America was the land of the free. It gives us a serenity that makes it possible to enjoy all the goodies that life has to offer. Most importantly, a police state keeps the riff-raff away from decent and upright citizens. Why should only the rich live in gated communities when a police state democratizes them by making the entire country a gated community?
Now, it is a fact that gated communities all have their rules designed to regulate behavior and keep property values up, and the America, the community, would be no different. For that matter, America, the community would be quite liberal in that the only rule would be that nobody could criticize your administration, which is not a problem since few people pay that much attention to anything you do.
Moreover, don’t worry about your sagging numbers. Your every action is aided and abetted by Rove’s Raiders, those centrist Democrats who would rather kiss the corporate ass than win an election.
