Dear George,

Occasionally, an incident takes place that screams metaphor.  Unfortunately, such an incident gives rise to prose that is as shrill as it is hyperbolic, squeezing every ounce of meaning out of a rather prosaic event that has little in the way of meaning to offer.  We have such an incident in the Big Dick pumping Henry Whittington full of buckshot.

If anything, the incident beams a laser on the Big Dick’s sterling character.  The man is goal oriented, and once he sets his sights on a goal, he lets nothing stand in his way.  He would not let the truth stand in the way of the Iraq enterprise; he is not letting the Constitution stand in the way of the War on Terror.  Therefore, it stands to reason that he was not going to let Harry come between him and a quail. Shooting Harry was consistent with his character.

The only question that remains is the condition of the quail.  Did the Big Dick take it out too, or is it home regaling its family with the droll tale of a human being too stupid to tell the difference between a bird and a man?

Your admirer,

Belacqua Jones
