Dear George,

The sun has set on Ash Wednesday throwing us into a period that is fraught with peril.  I am speaking of Lent, that dark passage of time that is a threat to sound Christian dogma and continuing prosperity. The danger is the Lenten subtext that requires the death of the ego and the resurrection of the Soul.  Lent is a Siren’s song that would dash the ego’s vessel on the rocks of God’s eternal headlock.

Such a resurrection is anathema to the corporatist state, which demands a crippled ego as a necessary condition for its growth. It needs an ego that mistakes the whimpering candle of reductionist reason for the blinding light of enlightenment, and sees the dank cavern of its prison the Elysian Fields.  Thus, it is imperative that Church and State trivialize the Soul and reduce it to an empty word that pads prayers and scriptures, a vague remembrance of a mythic golden age.

Transmute Lent into an exercise in self-gratification, and Easter into a 20 percent storewide reduction on all merchandise, and you will insure the continued strength of Amerika, Inc.

Your admirer,

Belacqua Jones
