Dear George,

How is it possible for a handful of technocrats to jerk around the rest of the nation without being ridden out of town on a rail?  It is possible because America believes it can force the madness of the soul into a rational straightjacket.  In attempting to do so, they lose the soul, but keep the madness. This rational madness has given them the Patriot Act, Gitmo, Iraq, and the spiking of social services.

A civilization reaches the apex of its power when it is able to conceal its barbarity beneath euphemisms like, “collateral damage.”  This civilization dresses the Devil in a business suit, hands him a pair of glasses and sends him to testify before a congressional committee in language that is as banal as it is boring.

This same madness has created a race of articulate zombies who have bounced from charnel house to charnel house, followed faithfully by the masses who have nothing better to do. We are democracy on the march, George, spreading freedom and prosperity wherever we go.  Of course, freedom’s just another word for saying that you’re fucked.

Your admirer,

Belacqua Jones
