Dear George,

I’m glad to see you’re standing by your man, Rummy, even though complaints about his incompetence continue to grow.  Rummy is a man ahead of his time.  He is redefining the meaning of war, so it is inevitable he will be misunderstood and reviled.  He is the right man in the right place at the right time, for he is exactly what we need for this new age of warfare.

Traditionally, the military objective in any war was to win.  You have changed all that with your Eternal War of the Empty Policy.  The emphasis, here, is on Eternal.  That means the war goes on and on.  The last thing we want to do is to win the goddamn thing.  The eternal nature of this war demands incompetent leadership, and Rummy fits the bill perfectly.  We don’t need a gaggle of military experts screwing things up.  Rummy was wise to keep them out of the planning stage.  Promise me Rummy will plan the Iran invasion.  With his talent and ability, we’ll be mired down in the Middle East for decades.

Your admirer,

Belacqua Jones
