Dear George,
Here we are, nearly through the Eastertide and Jesus has been defanged for another year. What a wonderful tool Easter is, how brilliant of the early church fathers to create it. Jesus preached a dangerous message of freedom won by slipping the surly bonds of the ego. He offered a freedom few people would be capable of achieving. Those who did would become enemies of the state.
The problem was how to turn the rigor of his Way into comfort food. What better way than to make Jesus a sacrificial lamb that redeemed mankind through his death. According to legend, when Jesus gave up the spirit, the earth shook and Adam’s skull broke through the mud at the foot of the cross. Upon this skull, the last drop of Jesus’ blood fell, thus redeeming all of humanity. It was a perfect gambit. Jesus died for our sins, leaving us free to sin again.
Because we are redeemed, we can slaughter with impunity; because we are redeemed, a child can go to bed hungry; because we are redeemed, a homeless man can die alone in a gutter; because we are redeemed, we can trash the earth. Jesus Christ has risen today and the pious are free to wallow in the sanctity of their personal salvation so obsessively they blot out the screams of the world. All the while, the servitude of the rich and the poor continues unabated.
Happy Easter, George.

Belacqua Jones
