Dear George,

One of the State’s most important functions is cutting the Almighty down to size.  For a deity to be socially acceptable, he must be reduced to manageable proportions because the primary function of any State-approved deity is to give violence the dogmatic rationalization it needs to function effectively.  It is the marriage of religion and the State that tames God and puts a bloody sword in his hand.  A sign of this successful marriage is the appearance of bumper stickers that read, “God Bless America.”  By claiming that the State has a unique covenantal relationship with God, the State reduces Him to a tribal deity, who becomes the State’s self-referential light against which all else is a foreboding darkness.

Let’s take Christianity as an example.  Christ’s teachings were simply too radical for general application.  No State can survive that loves its enemies.  St. Paul tempered this radicalism by proclaiming that Christ’s mission on Earth was to die for our sins, and that through Christ we are redeemed to got forth and kill some more.

So continue to claim guidance from the Almighty, George.  Every time you do, you sap His strength.

Your admirer,

Belacqua Jones
