Dear George,

I want to run two quotes by you and see if you can guess who said what:

If we show weakness in front of the enemy the expectations will increase but if we stand against them, because of this resistance, they will retreat.

Today it should be clear that not only is weakness provocative, but the perception of weakness on our part can be provocative as well…[1]

Give up?

The first quote was from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and the second from Rummy, himself.  The one thing both have in common is a fear of weakness.  (It also proves the old adage that we become what we fight)

The reason for this phobia is obvious.  The most enlightened of societies operate at the emotional level of a mature eighth grader.  However, the moment you throw religion and mission into the mix, a society begins to function at the emotional level of a fifth grade bully, and only bullies fear weakness.

The nation that practices its foreign policy as if it were a fifth grade bully reaps many benefits.  It gets to seize all the lunch money from the other children.  It gets to hone its paranoid aggression to a sharp edge, because its actions trigger resentment in its victims making potential enemies of them.  Thus, the bully nation gets to live in the heady world of anxious fear because it is convinced everyone is out to hurt it.

You have called on America for sacrifice in pursuit of your Eternal War of the Empty Policy.  The greatest sacrifice a country can make is to be a bully.  The very act bleeds a country’s soul.  All bullies age, though they never mature.  It is their fate to end up alone and locked in their rooms, frightened by every footfall and every breath of wind.

Bully on, George!

Your admirer,

Belacqua Jones
