Dear George,
Your critics are so tiresome! Now they are all braying for Gonzo’s head. It’s time they wake up and join the reality-based community. Gonzo didn’t fire those U.S. attorneys for political reasons. The only thing he and Rove and Miers care about is efficient management.
George, we live in a world driven by change that is as rapid as it is superficial. In the old world of slow but meaningful change, debate and discussion were viable options. But in today’s world of trivial overload, discussion and debate are luxuries we can no longer afford. Sound bytes and data bytes swirl around us like polluted particulates, clogging every synapse in our brain. Any attempt to think in such a toxic atmosphere would surely lead to a complete mental breakdown.
Our salvation is ideology. Ideology is the compass that guides us through the smokescreen of data overload. No matter what the question, ideology has a ready answer, whether it is right or wrong. There is no doubt, no hesitation. Ideology is well suited to our go-go lives.
Now we begin to see what the Three Musketeers were getting at. It is more important that DOJ attorneys are on your ideological wavelength than that they be competent. It makes no difference how brilliant a man is if he is marching out of step to the beat of your ideological drum.
Your administration has erected a large, ideological tent, big enough to embrace all who wish to enter. The more people and institutions you can drive beneath its sheltering folds, the more you will achieve the unity of purpose that will propel us down the road to wherever.
Your admirer,
Belacqua Jones
