Dear George,
For a man of your mature vision, politics must appear very sophomoric. I know I have broached this subject before, but your response to Congress’s plan to hold a non-binding vote of no confidence on the Gonzo really tickled my tweeter.
You dismissed this congressional attempt at oversight and democracy as the, “kind of political theater that has caused the American people to lose confidence in how Washington operates.”
It is a relief to see that you still have a gift for irony even as your administration goes down in flames. You who have done so much to create a firewall between Washington D.C. and the American people have the cajones to accuse Congress of creating a wedge between government and the people when this is exactly what you want to happen.
The first rule of a successful homicide is to hand the smoking gun to the person standing closest to you. The death of politics is long overdue. This childish nonsense raised its ugly head with the emergence of democracy and must die with democracy. As capitalism morphs into Corporatism, the last vestiges of an immature democracy will fall way, to be replaced by a mature and benevolent authoritarianism.
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, only two forms of entertainment were available to the public: politics and religion. The political rally was a popular form of escapism, a break from the drudgery of day-to-day living. The downside, of course, was that people were too damn involved in the day-to-day workings of government.
Authoritarianism had to wait until there was an exponential increase in the diversions available to the public. Between multiplex movie theaters and a gaggle of cable television channels, the public has finally lost interest in the political process.
One-hundred years from now, historians will look back and marvel at the barbarity of a system that actually allowed the public to participate in the workings of government. In the advanced civilization of the future, the public will be spared the chaos and grime of the political mosh pit.
Your admirer,
Belacqua Jones
