Dear George,

FEMA’s snap-to response to the California fires shows that cronyism works.  So what if the news conference the agency called on fifteen minutes notice was a fraud with staffers posing as reporters as they threw softball questions at their supervisors.  The fact that they were willing to share their expertise with the public regardless of the integrity of the forum demonstrates a high degree of management professionalism.

People are already comparing the fires with Katrina.  It is important from the get-go that FEMA deny that its rapid response to the fires had anything to do with the victims’ ethnicity or economic class.  Nothing, nada, nope, not a chance, no way, nyet, nugatory, nein, nagen, no, no, no, no, no, no!  We are a democracy, a land of equal opportunity, home of the free; a land where equality is allows any man to rise to the top if he has the greed, the drive and the connections to do so

The only similarity between Katrina and the fires is that both demonstrate that Nature can snuff us whenever the mood strikes her, and the more we push her back, the more willing is she to kick our homo sapien asses.

Your admirer,

Belacqua Jones
