Dear George,
Whoever came up with the term, “Islamofascist” is a genius. He understands that nothing stirs hatred like a fiction. “Witchcraft” worked wonders for the Middle Ages. “Race” continues to stir passions and create chaos. The truth is that truth puts people to sleep; make believe stirs them to community action, be it torching a witch or lynching a Black.
America cannot function without a demon to hate. In its absence, the public sinks to new levels of decadence and depravity. Hate is what gives Columbia her moral backbone.
Islamofascism works because we can measure America’s memory of the past in nanoseconds.
It is easy to build Islamofascism into a pseudo-threat because nobody knows squat about either Islam or fascism.
It is easy to smear Ahmadinejad as the new Hitler because nobody remembers who the fuck Hitler was. A name does not stir; it is the way it is sneered.
It is easy to say Ahmadinejad wants to wipe Israel off the map because nobody has bothered to read an accurate translation of what he actually said, which was, “The regime that occupies Jerusalem will disappear from the pages of history.” You have deftly taken his description of an impersonal historical process and turned it into a threat against Israel.
Fairy tales are wonderfully effective. Thanks to the mainlining of Islamofascism into the public vein, fifty-two percent of Americans think we should attack Iran. It is so easy to scam someone who has no memory of having been scammed. America is like the man who lost his shirt playing three-card Monte on Monday and is back playing again on Tuesday because he is under the delusion that it will be different this time.
The best propaganda tools have no basis in reality. They are props in a macabre theater from hell that whips up fear and hatred where none existed before.
Greed drives war; lies justify it.
Your admirer,
Belacqua Jones
